What is self care and why is it important? Self care refers to activities we do daily to look after ourselves. For example, eating healthy, exercising and getting enough sleep.

It’s important to practice self care in order to function our best. Making self care a habit doesn’t have to be a chore, and will help you perform well at work, have energy for your family, and live a productive life.

Here are some tips for making self care a habit in your daily life:

1.Make a healthy diet, regular exercise and adequate rest your personal priorities. Too many of us work demanding jobs that require us to work 45–60 hours a week, or have us constantly stressed out. In order to combat the fatigue associated with these schedules, we must make sure we are taking care of ourselves.

Prep healthy meals ahead of time to ensure you’ll have good food throughout the day. Schedule time in your day for exercise, whether it be early in the morning, or in the evening when you get home from work. Great sleep is essential.

Turn off your phone and devices 1 hour before bed. Don’t try to finish schoolwork or job related projects right before bed. Make getting good sleep a priority in your daily routine.

2.Set boundaries with friends or family who demand too much time or energy. We all have that friend or family member who wants to be the center of our attention.

Maybe it’s your sister who constantly wants you to entertain her by taking her to movies, events or other activities. Or that friend who wants to monopolize your “me” time to indulge in the latest gossip.

Without being rude, simply explain that you need some time to yourself, and you have specific days or times set aside to spend time with them. In most cases, they will understand.

3.Find ways to relax. For example, you could practice meditation or yoga, get a massage, take a bath, or go for a walk in your neighborhood. Keeping stress levels low is vitally important to your emotional, mental and physical health.

Incorporating at least one of these activities into your daily routine could make all the difference in the world. Make a point to find an activity that helps you cope with stress, and work it into your schedule for the day.

4.Try to do something you enjoy everyday. That could be dancing, working in the garden, or painting. Doing something you enjoy will make you feel good about yourself, and can also help relieve stress.

You will look forward to this part of the day, and it will make it easier to get through work or school. Completing tasks, like chores that are usually boring and tedious, will seem easier after you’ve had your “me” time. So schedule time to do something you enjoy each day.

5.Learn to love yourself. It’s easy to become focused on our faults and give into self doubt and self hate. I, for one, am guilty of this. I compare myself to others and their level of success, and begin to feel insecure.

I’m sure a lot of people do the same. It’s time to stop this pattern of thinking, and practice new habits. For example, every time you look in the mirror, tell yourself you are strong and beautiful.

Every time you accomplish a new goal, say I am enough. I have gotten myself this far. Do the best you can from day to day. Repeat positive affirmations to yourself daily.

You’ll be surprised to find that the negative thoughts will decrease or vanish all together.

6.Unplug. From the internet of course! That’s right, temporarily delete your social media apps if necessary. While social media can be fun, it can also lead to mild depression in some people.

Constantly comparing yourself to everyone else’s seemingly perfect life brings out a lot of negative thoughts and feelings. It’s easy to feel inadequate or incomplete.

There is nothing wrong with taking a break from social media by temporarily deleting your apps. Don’t worry, all your information is saved and will still be there when you reinstall them.

And that’s it!

There are many other ways to practice self care, but these are some of the most important ones in my opinion. Find a way to incorporate one or more of these tips everyday, and you will feel healthier, happier and be more productive at work or school.

It may mean creating a schedule for yourself each day in order to complete each of these tasks. But you find it’s well worth it in the end.

It’s so important to nourish your body and soul. When you take good care of yourself, you will find you live a longer, happier, more fulfilling life. Make self care a priority today.
